Understanding Medicare Parts A–D

Medicare has four parts, each covering different aspects of your healthcare. Let us help you understand what's right for you.

A

Part A: Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care services. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

  • Inpatient hospital stays (semi-private room, meals, nursing)
  • Skilled nursing facility care after qualifying stay
  • Hospice care for terminal illness
  • Home health care in certain situations
B

Part B: Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. Part B has a standard monthly premium that most beneficiaries pay.

  • Doctor and outpatient hospital visits
  • Preventive services and screenings
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Mental health services
C

Part C: Medicare Advantage

All-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies. These plans include Parts A and B coverage, and usually Part D, often with extra benefits.

  • Combines Parts A, B, and usually D
  • Often includes dental, vision, and hearing
  • May include fitness programs and telehealth
  • Network-based (HMO, PPO, or PFFS)
D

Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs, including many recommended vaccines. Plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

  • Coverage for brand-name and generic drugs
  • Formulary varies by plan
  • Help with out-of-pocket costs
  • Extra Help program for qualifying individuals

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans

Medigap policies help pay some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans can give you more predictable out-of-pocket costs.

Plan F

Most comprehensive coverage for those eligible before 2020

Plan G

Most popular plan — covers nearly everything except Part B deductible

Plan N

Lower premiums with small copays for office and ER visits
